Following her departure from the Panthers she stopped going to high school, after having been a student for a year at Calumet High School. The singer began performing in small groups all over the Chicago area, initially performing with Cash McCall's group Lyfe with her former boyfriend Hassan Khan. Chaka Khan and Hassan got married in the year 1970.
