The singer is also the frontwoman for Rufus. Khan was raised as a Catholic. She went to the school for elementary students of Saint Thomas the Apostle Church in Hyde Park. She said that her grandmother was the one who introduced her to the jazz genre as a child, was responsible the reason for her love of music. The singer began performing in small groups all over the Chicago area, initially performing with Cash McCall's group Lyfe with her former boyfriend Hassan Khan. Chaka Khan and Hassan got married in the year 1970.
