Despacito is a hit song from Puerto Rican singer Luis Fonsi together with Daddy Yankee was released in 2017. It was the top one streamed music at that in just six months. The track is a mixture of pop music and reggaeton was not only a way to bring renewed interest to reggaeton but it also brought attention to Latin music more generally. The release of Justin Bieber's bilingual version to Despacito (2017) well-known artists quickly began to collaborate with reggaeton performers including Drake and Bad Bunny on MIA (2018) as well as Madonna and Maluma for Medellin (2019). In 2020, a few Reggaeton performers were complaining about how the genre was moving toward the mainstream. But, the younger generation Rauw Alejandro, was keen to push forward the progression. It often blended elements from electronic dance music and other types.
